How journalists spend the holiday

Okay, 'splain to me how this is even fair? I'm sitting here, at work. The ONLY person in the office. ONLY PERSON. It's so quiet I can hear the clock ticking *tick tick tick* I'm getting ready to go cover a third Fourth of July event where EVERYBODY else is having fun with their families. And I'm working. Driving around in my car. That has no air conditioning. And it's 94-degrees and dripping wet with humidity out. Sounds like fun, eh?

Oh, did I mention? My family is at home entertaining a few people. Swimming in the nice, clear, cool pool and barbecuing hamburgers I mixed up and patted out last night AND eating the red, white and blue potato salad I made last night. *slips into whiny kid-voice mode* It's. Not. Fair!

It's so lame to have to cover any "normal" 4th o July celebrations. IT'S THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR!!! Just find an article from a few years ago, edit the weather (or not-it's always hot there in July), and go home early. I mean, really, so-n-so veteran had a barbecue and sparklers? Really??! Gasp! Shock!

I watched fireworks last night. I wuv fireworks. So pretty...

I'm sure the top stories from July 4th are like just before Christmas...."last minute shoppers rush malls...." Ohhhhhhh. "Hunger picnickers grill hot dogs, eat red, white and blue potato salad." Ahhhh.

And how do you do that with the potato salad?

Yup, it was pretty much same ole, same ole, 'cept, this year, I got to hang out on a farm for awhile, which was a nice change. It was still hot as hell though. Ugh.

Wendy, the red, white and blue potato salad is made with red, white and blue potatoes, with their skins left on. I think the blue potatoes are absolutely beautiful! The red ones turn a little pinkish during the boiling, but I balance the red out with pimentoes.

Working on the Fourth: Ick. Days like that are just totally pointless. Why even bother going in?

Dorky Dad, unfortunately, someone had to be in the newsroom "just in case." You know, just in case something big blows up or someone is murdered. *sigh* I drew the lucky straw this year. Better than working Christmas!
