Snow Day!

Snow over ice...what better reason to stay home and telecommute? We got the biggest snowflakes I've seen in a LONG time and ended up with well over an inch of the white stuff over an inch of the slick, slippery icy stuff. If you click the pics, you'll get a bigger version and a better look at the HUGE snow flakes. Sorry they are so dark, it's a tad gray out today.

Snow, snow, snow! View from the front door towards the pond and driveway.

Black dog, black Dodge, dusted in big white flakes.

"Wooly Mammoth" comes to mind. Don't worry, they are nice and toasty warm under their fluffy snow coats. The pasture, unfortunately, looks like a war zone. We've had so much rain it hasn't had time to dry and horses aren't kind to wet ground. This is my "sacrifice" paddock. I have 10 more acres of nice, (soon to be)grassy, woodsy pasture they haven't managed to destroy.

"Are you SURE you don't have any more carrots hiding in those pockets? I think you do. Come closer, I wanna check." Calypso wants to go for a gallop in the snow, I can see it in her eyes I just might oblige!

We didn't get ANY snow..let alone pretty big fluffy flakes. We just got sleet, ice and more sleet. They shut the highway down in front of me yesterday. I spent 3 hours in my car and 3 hours at the office..what a wasted day. Oh well..work bought us Imo's.
I love the horses in the snow..beautiful :-)

1st, i've been off line for a few days so i'm catching up...So glad you found out your heart is fine. Hope you find the problem soon tho!
2nd, those flakes in that's last picture are HUGE! It amazes me how the horses manage not to break a leg walking on that frozen lumpy ground. Take care! :)

MP...the little town just a few miles from us got very, very little snow and lots and lots of ice. This region is SO strange.

a.di...They are standing in the worst part of the pasture, the lowest part that seems to stay wettest longest. When it gets really frozen I turn them out in the grass fields so they can run and act like fools. They can't tear it up if it's frozen! It's not frozen solid right now, a little crunchy on top, but still soggy underneath.

I love the snow pictures. My mare has forgotten what snow is. Are you having to chop ice out of the water tank? Are the horses' hooves packed with muddy ice balls? Do you have to drag in the hose so it doesn't freeze solid? Do the chicken eggs freeze? Do your toes and fingers freeze when you are out doing chores? Oops sorry, I have just gotten carried away. Memories.........

Goat Roper...distant memories, I'm sure! ROFL! Nope, no chopping of ice for me. It's the one thing about horses in winter that I absolutely abhor...so, I keep the stock tank heater plugged in at all times! Warm water for the ponies, no frozen hands digging out chunks of ice for me. The hose now lives in the basement...of course, it lived outside until I forgot about it and it froze solid. No snow balls on their feet, I had the shoes pulled! Chicken eggs DO freeze! Lousy, lazy hens won't set on 'em to keep 'em warm. So we end up with little frozen egg bombs.
Just my nose freezes.

Did you go for a ride in the snow? That sounds so fun!

Remember that one winter in Kansas when we had to fight our way half a mile down a gravel road during a raging blizzard while hauling buckets of water on a sled for the horses?

Ahhhh, the memories of youth...

I shouldn't read this blog so late at night -- I actually read "the horse now lives in the basement"! :-)

The photos are amazing, almost black and white. No one's swimming naked THIS week!
