We have ova

We now have about 30 little chickens running around the place. Only two of them have been laying eggs because all the other egg-laying hens met an untimely demise, one way or another. We got two big, brown wonderful eggs every day. Save them up for a week and there was enough for a big ole skillet of scrambled eggs come Saturday morning.

Last night Unruly came running into the house after checking for eggs and putting the chickens in their house for the night.

"MOM! The babies are LAYING! Look! Look!" she yelled, running towards me with something cradled in her palm.

Sure enough. The Araucanas have started earning their keep around the farm and are laying eggs. We have a little green egg in the carton surrounded by big brown ones to prove it. Yay!

Now, if all those other little ones can get their acts together and start popping out some eggs, I'll start thinking about making some crepes...

How tiny are the new eggs? Grandson wants chickens and we have given the OK for him to build a coop....

Kathy...the first egg was about half the size of the regular brown eggs, which would be classified as "Jumbo" in the grocery store. Sometimes we get eggs so huge they won't fit in the carton! The green egg we got yesterday was more normal sized, maybe a "large" classification. I second chickens! I love chickens, and they sure do a great job of keeping the horse poo cleaned up and the bugs at bay.

Jim...you haven't tasted the best crepes EVER until you've had one made with farm fresh eggs. The eggs make all the difference in the world. It's the same difference between a homegrown tomato fresh off the vine and a tasteless, cardboard tomato from a hothouse.

Wendy...I'd ship ya some, but I don't think UPS would be too happy about broken eggs in their trucks. :P
