Closer to self-sustainment

My momma's gonna say I'm crazy. But that's okay, she might be right. But craziness tends to run in the genes ya know.

We have organic, free-range, home grown eggs. We have organic, free-range home grown duck meat. We will soon have organic, free-range home grown honey, veggies and herbs.

And next year, we'll have organic, free-range, home grown milk, yogurt and cheese.

These little Nubian/Boer girls (twins!) are coming home Friday. They don't have names yet and are two months old.

Look at those ears! Cuteness defined.

She looks more like her momma than her papa.

And the added bonus is these little buggers will eat the weeds the horses won't touch with a ten foot pole. Yay! I refuse to spray weeds with poison and I'm getting a little bit sick and tired of pulling them out by hand.

Cute like crazy! Sometimes I wish we lived on some land so I could grow my own stuff and not have to worry about whether or not what I'm eating is safe, clean, and healthy. Stupid "evolved" world we live in.

Okey dokey-then: will this be like the 'mother's curse'? Did you ever hear from mamma's lip, "one day I hope you have goats just like this one."??? Your mamma will never say you are crazy, but you will. When 1-a goat jumps ON the hood of your pretty truck. 2-a goat breaks into house by jumping through screen/storm door. 3-you find your wild child bringing pet goat into house. 4-neighbors from miles away call you asking if your children are outside crying maaamaaa, or if it just your annoying KIDS again. 5-by the way, your mama loves goats, other people's goats.

I'm SO jealous! Not fair! Why am I the one that had to go and get stuck in a stupid little apartment in an even stupider city? EEERRRGGGG!

I suggested to Jenn that she get those shock collars they make for dogs to train the goats to keep away from vehicles.
I was joking, of course :)

Krista...I love knowing where my food comes from..and that it is treated humanely and not pumped full of steroids. And the girls get a kick out of gathering eggs before breakfast and having a big ole omelet or scrambled eggs that day!

Goat Roper...I'm pretty sure the silly little things will end up in the house at some point...and if they get on my truck or eat the house, they will end up in the freezer! They won't be quite as free-range as the chickens are. I'm not looking forward to the initial, constant "maaa-ing" that I know we'll be tortured with!

Amy...I seriously considered the electric shock collars....*grin* but regular ole collars and a tether will have to do for now. You're welcome to come over at any time and cuddle our doelings.

Wendy...I know! And twins...double the trouble.

a. di...ROFL! I do remember her! I think that was Annabelle.

Nell...I'm really hoping that not only will these girls turn out to be good milkers, but they'll be good, friendly pets, too. I really like goats. Better than sheep. They are intelligent and playful. Sheep are, well, they're sheep.

I suggest the names Mary Kate and Ashley.

*snicker*

Good for you! In many ways I envy what you are doing.

mp...yup, honey is on its way! I don't know if we'll actually have some this year, but definitely next year! I can't wait. There is a little guy down the road from us who has an apiary in his orchard and sells his honey in the locally owned gas stations and farmers market for about $6 a jar. I gladly pay it because it is SO much better than store-bought honey. You can almost taste the different flowers in the honey and it tastes just like a summer day smells.

Sona...how funny! Unruly and I were discussing names last night and I think we've settled on Willow and Ashley! I'm going to go pick out brightly colored collars for them today, and they are coming home around 5:30 tonight. :P
